Career Guidance

Should I return to a previous employer?

How the I Ching Approaches This

The I Ching views returning to a former employer as neither inherently wise nor unwise — it depends on what has changed and what hasn't. The key question is whether you would be returning to familiar comfort or to a genuinely new opportunity within a known environment. People and organizations change, and sometimes the right path leads through territory you've traveled before, but with new eyes and new capabilities.

Common Hexagram Patterns

Return questions often draw hexagrams about cycles and renewal. Hexagram 24 (Return) appears when a natural cycle is bringing you back to a previous point, but with new understanding. Hexagram 17 (Following) suggests following the opportunity wherever it leads. Hexagram 12 (Standstill) warns that the old environment may still be stagnant. Hexagram 49 (Revolution) indicates that the organization itself has transformed and the return would be to something genuinely new.
